Summer solstice, celebrating Balder's Wake

  • Wild Heart Hill Long Furlong Worthing, England, BN14 0RJ United Kingdom (map)

Join us on Wednesday the 21st of June at Wild Heart Hill in Findon to celebrate the summer solstice, Wellderness-style.

June 21st is the longest day of the year, with the sun’s rays beaming down until late into the evening.

From here, while summer is hitting its heights, the sun begins its slow descent, content that nature will thrive until it returns to rest over winter.

Our little island shares a deep and rich history with the Scandinavian countries. And this year’s Summer Solstice celebrations are inspired by our Scandinavian cousins and their story of Balder’s Wake.

The story is a chance to wish Balder - our beloved sun - a safe journey as it wanders through its seasonal cycle. It is entwined in our own old ways, as it is for cultures around the world, who have told similar stories for many thousands of years.

Guided by White Raven Ceremonies, our celebration will follow Balder’s tale, and you’re invited to immerse yourself in this ancient ritual, as much as you like. Whether observing or taking part, you will be witness to a ceremony that echoes our ancestors and the communities of old.

If you wish, you can wear a garland of yellow, white, orange and red flowers (or even just a single stem). This can be your gift to Balder as you celebrate his journey through the seasons.

As always, the campfire will be lit, the kettles will be warmed and we’ll be there to welcome you with hot brews, amazing stories and a wonderful community. And, naturally, we’ll close with a spectacular Poi Passion fire show!
